Le Mas Blanc Writer’s Retreat, situated in the vineyards of Tornac, France, offers a self-contained studio-bedsitting room with ensuite bathroom & shower, on the top floor of an old stone barn. The retreat is available by the week, or at a daily rate (for periods of four days or more), for writers, musicians, artists, translators, editors, or photographers who require a private, quiet place to work.

Whether you come to find visual inspiration in the French countryside, to write the first draft of a novel, to do the final proof-reading of your galleys, or to compose the perfect oboe concerto, your time spent at Le Mas Blanc will be as peaceful and as productive as you want it to be.

You will be undisturbed except for the sounds of early morning birdsong and the nearby waterfall. If the weather is fine, as it usually is, you will have access to a table and chair on the terrace shaded by an old micocoulier tree.

Le Mas Blanc is the name of the old stone house in which Isabel Huggan lives. Blanc is French for “white”, and Mas is the word for “farmhouse” in this part of France, usually indicating a dwelling that is home to more than one family, having been extended by outbuildings over time.  Across the gravel driveway from her section of the house (built in the early 1700s) sits the stone barn, built in 1853, in which your room is located.

The studio-bedsitting room is equipped with a kettle, teapot and French press coffee pot, as well as a small refrigerator and a microwave-grill, so that you can make your own breakfast and lunch.  Bedding and towels are provided. If you come by car, you may want to take your evening meal/dinner at any of the several cafes and restaurants in Anduze (the closest town, seven kilometres from Tornac). If you do not have your own transportation, an evening meal will be provided at low cost, and can be had on a tray in your room or on the terrace, or with Isabel Huggan at her table, as you choose.

The studio is equipped with high-speed internet by cable, and there is a colour printer and scanner at your disposal.

The studio can only be reached by stairs, and thus is not wheelchair-accessible.
